Vacuum Cleaner Reviews and Ratings
Article by Jenny
Whether your home is big, small, in the center of a sprawling city or tucked away in a beautiful suburb, you will still need to clean your home. Dust, mites, pet dander, harmful pathogens are all part of every normal household, whether you can see them or not. And that’s why vacuum cleaners are so indispensable. Every home needs one to maintain a clean, spic and span household.
The three main types of vacuum cleaners that you will predominantly find in the market today are uprights, canisters and hand-held models. Each of these are meant for specific purposes, the upright and canisters can be used to cover larger areas while the handhelds are usually meant for smaller spaces or spots around the home that tend to collect dust on a daily basis.
The best vacuum cleaners not only clean your home efficiently, they will also help you clean your home in record time. And there are some vacuum cleaners which make cleaning actually fun. From vacuums with no frills to ones with so many gadgets that they almost seem like expensive toys, you get various different types that you can choose from depending on your specific needs.

With so many innovative models available, it is difficult for most of us to find the one that is right for us. And finding the best vacuum cleaner is of paramount importance as it can make this daily chore either easy and effortless or something that you dread to do every day. And ones that contain poor quality filters can leave you vulnerable to allergies and diseases.
To choose the right vacuum cleaner for you, you will need to take into consideration the size of your home and the amount of vacuuming that you will need to get done on a daily basis. You also need to consider whether you will be vacuuming on bare floors or carpets, because bare floors need vacuum cleaners without brushes while carpets need ones with brushes.
You also need to factor in your pets when you select your vacs as some are made specifically for homes with pets.
Then comes the price. You get handhelds that cost under $100 and canister models that cost well over $600. How much do you want to spend on one?
Best Vacuum Cleaners
Vacuum cleaners are one of the most ‘taken for granted’ things in any home. Nobody even thinks about them till they conk off and then they start to crib about the fact that they paid so much for a machine that did not last more than a couple of years. This is because most people really don’t take the time to do some background searching before they buy a vacuum cleaner.
In this article we want to save you the hassle of reading through umpteen reviews to find the right one for you and are therefore listing out the top ones in each category – upright, bagless and canister models.
Top upright bagged vacuum cleaners
The bagged vacuum cleaners are dominated by Hoover. Hoover has a very long and respected name when it comes to vacuum cleaners and there are people who have used only Hoovers their entire life. In fact many reviews say that after 20 yrs of service people have replaced their Hoovers with another Hoover.
The best one in our opinion is the Hoover tempo widepath. The widepath is one of the all time favorites and even now, with a number of more technologically advanced models in the market, the widepath is still the top selling one. The reason for this is obvious. Most people are really not interested in the settings or the features as long as their machine does what it says it will do. And the Hoover widepath does more than it says and when you see the price you’ll actually think that other machines are unnecessarily overpriced.
The next best is also a Hoover and it is the Hoover windtunnel model. The windtunnel is a relatively new technology by Hoover standards and is just their way of saying that the suction air is channeled through ‘tunnels’ improving the efficiency of the vacuum cleaner. You get both the bagged and the baggless models with the windtunnel model and the bagless one is actually more popular than the bagged one, but when looking only at the bagged machines, the windtunnel is a very good model, one that you cannot go wrong with.
Our third best bagged vacuum model is the Hoover commercial elite. It does not have too many of the extra features of other Hoover models, but it is made for commercial use and is therefore one of the best machines that you will get for the price. Although ignored by most home users because of its plane Jane looks, it is a very very good machine and one that will surprise you with how well it works.
Top upright bagless vacuum cleaners
The bagless vacuum cleaners are the new kid on the block and although they have been around for about a decade or so, are still not anywhere near the century of use that bagged vacuums have seen. Many of them are good and really work well, while others are just not worth the money you pay. Below we see the top baggless models.
The top bagless vacuum cleaner will have to be the Hoover Windtunnel T series. It is the bagless version of the bagged model and costs a little more. But when you take into consideration how well it works and how you don’t ever have to get a bag for them again, they make better value for money than many bagged models. Then you get the Hoover advantage plus the tried and tested windtunnel model with just the addition of the bagless technology.
The next model in our list is the Dyson DC 33. Many people will be surprised that the Dyson comes in at second place, but although they are the best machines that you can get, they fall short in the value for money stakes. The machine costs twice what a good Hoover costs and that is why they are second. Yet as a machine they are very good and work better than any other machine you would have ever had before. There are reviews where people say that the Dyson has pulled out clods of dirt that are years if not decades old, so you know how good it is.
The last one on our list is, once again surprisingly, the Dirt Devil Dynamite. Dirt Devil is not known to make high quality machines and most people steer clear of them, but with the Dynamite, they have a winner on their hands. It has all the disadvantages that all Dirt Devils come with, they are really noisy, are not the best cleaners and are not really built to take a beating, but at less than $50 for a bagless model, you cannot argue with them. At this price you don’t expect the machine to last more than 2 yrs and this is more than covered by the warranty period alone.
Top canister vacuum cleaners
Canister vacuums are not very popular in our country. Most of us use upright ones, and people who get canister vacuums are those who have a specific need. Because of this the top selling canister models are not necessarily the best ones.
For example the top selling canister vaccum cleaner is the Bissell Zing canister. It is a very cheap one and at less than $50 is also one of the cheapest ones. Like most other Bissells you don’t get much, but you get a machine that will work reasonably well for a few years before you have to replace them.
The third selling one too is very similar and is the Eureka 3670 canister model. This one too is a very cheap one and costs only about $15 more than the Bissell, and like other Eureka vacuums is a very simple but good one. There is nothing much to choose between the Bissell and the Eureka except that the Eureka is a little better made while the Bissell is a little cheaper.
The second most selling model is the really good one. It is the Miele Olympus and it costs more than three upright vacuums would. Yet like all other Miele products there is simply nothing that you cannot do with it. It is as good if not better than a dyson, and their after sales customer service too is top notch.
As we said, canisters are not preferred by most and the only people who buy it are those who have a specific need.
