Whenever you buy anything, the brand is very important, not so much for its snob appeal, but because different brands stand for different things. When it comes to vacuum cleaners, brands like Dyson operate at the stratospheric levels of the price spectrum. Other brands like Dirt Devil operate at the other end. Eureka is one that seamlessly straddles both these in the sense that you get a few low cost ones, many mid range ones, and a few high cost ones too.
And Eureka is a trustworthy brand. If you hear the name Eureka, you know that whatever the product is, it will be sturdy, and reliable, will work well, and even if there are any issues, the customer service is good. In this review we take up the Eureka Boss Smart Vac 4870 and examine whether it is a worthwhile buy or not.
Features Of The Eureka Boss Smartvac
This model from Eureka is one of their mid range ones which means that you don’t get too many extras with it. It is a very simple machine, and you pay money not so much for what you get extra, as for the fact that whatever you get is made really well.
This is not to mean that it is a bad vacuum, just that you don’t get all the bells and whistles. It’s just a standard vacuum with a 15 inch wide nozzle so that it makes your cleaning easy.
The motor is a 12 amp one, and is powerful enough to take out anything from anywhere. And the surprising thing about this model is that the beater brush is so designed so that you can use it both on and off carpet without changing anything. This is really great for those times when you want to clean the edges between, where most vacuums just don’t remove the imbedded dust.

If the pile is thick, you can lift up the brush. Not that it won’t work, you’ll just have to push harder.
You get a HEPA filter with the machine which means you don’t have to worry about dust blow back into the room from the exhaust. It also removes even pollen and other allergy causing material which means you get cleaner air in your home.
The filtering system is also three stage which means that the larger particles get trapped first, then comes the smaller ones, and finally the HEPA filter which is meant more for the really tiny ones. This means that the suction does not go down as quickly as in other machines.
You also get the standard crevice tool, dusting brush and a carpet cleaning one, along with a 30 ft cord and a stretch hose. The stretch hose is really unique because although it’s pretty small to start with, it can extend to 5 times its size. This means you don’t have a long hose getting tangled up behind you when you use it, it retracts itself when loose.

And that’s about it when it comes to features. As we said, you don’t pay for any extras with the machine, but you get the quality that you desire with the Eureka. Everything is solidly built, and the machine will last you years. It’s a really powerful machine which means that you will never lack for power at any time. It is also designed simply which means that there are less things to go wrong with it.
Our Recommendation
If you were to compare the Eureka to a car, we’d call it a Corolla, mid priced, and bullet proof. There may be other models that offer more in terms of features, but never with the same build quality.
We still give the Eureka Boss Smartvac Upright Vacuum 4.5 stars simply because Eureka have not upped the bar. Most other mainstream vacuum cleaners offer the same, reliable build but at a lower price. Or at this price they give you better features. This does not mean that the machine is bad, just that there are other, more value for money products out there.
